In this week’s show our guest, Kevin Qian, spoke at one point about how he helps his clients ‘converge’ on the right actionable idea.
In my work I help folks engage in both Divergent Thinking and Convergent Thinking and part of that effort is suggesting new labels for these concepts.
I call it Divergent Discovery, since that’s the sort of thinking you are doing at that stage, looking for as many ideas for solutions and as many categories of solutions as you can find.
And I call it Convergent Creation, since at this stage you are taking those ideas and relating them, mashing them together, arriving at the new idea that you are going to execute.
I have shared an effective creative exercise that helps you improve both. It’s the 30 Day Creative Action Program (CAP). Every day for 30 days you either do something you’ve never done before–for example, turn around in line at a coffee shop and introduce yourself to a stranger–or you do find something you do habitually and do it in the opposite fashion–if you are right handed, today brush your teeth left handed.
Find a new task each day and have some fun.
