They Shared a Stage With Britney Spears, Ryan Gosling and Justin Timberlake in the ’90s—Now 8 Former Mouseketeers Are Telling All ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Long before NSYNC filled football stadiums, Britney Spears redefined modern pop music, Christina Aguilera set the gold standard for vocal gymnastics, and Ryan Gosling became a three time Oscar nominee, they were just your average, yet talented teenagers, putting in eight-hour days on Soundstage 3 at Disney-MGM Studios in Orlando, Florida.

More than three decades after The Mickey Mouse Club premiered on the Disney Channel, the cultural footprint of that 1989–1994 era has never felt more alive. With Disney+ officially ordering a pilot for a reboot, questions abound about whether any new production could ever capture the lightning-in-a-bottle magic of the ’90s run.

So when I had the opportunity to sit down with eight ‘foundational’ 90s era Mouseketeers, Dale Godboldo, Deedee Magno Hall, Chasen Hampton, Jennifer McGill, Lindsey Alley, Nikki DeLoach, Rhona Bennett, and Tony Lucca, my inner teen could not believe it wasn’t a dream. After all, I raced home from school every day to watch The Mickey Mouse Club. I loved their covers of popular songs and hilarious skits. I had posters of The MMC’s very own pop group The Party all over my bedroom walls.

Fast forward over 30 years later and it’s like they never left the Clubhouse. The gang is still incredibly tight-knit and forever bonded. They’re still playfully making fun of each other, sharing favorite stories and laughing hysterically over inside jokes and pranks. I spent over two unfiltered hours on Zoom with the gang. They instantly made me feel an unofficial part of “the club” and trusted me to take them on a deep dive, going all the way back to the first time they put on a varsity jacket and filmed “roll call.”

We reminisced about the past, got deep about why there’s such nostalgia for the 90s and early aughts and wondered how things would have been back then with social media or reality TV in the mix. I can’t wait for you to join Dale, Deedee, Chasen, Jennifer, Lindsey, Nikki, Rhona, and Tony as they pull back the curtain on teenage life at Walt Disney World, reflect on the peers who became major stars, their biggest “concern” about the forthcoming reboot and so much more.

The Megastars Before the Mania

Christina Aguilera, Marque “Tate” Lynche, Nikki DeLoach, Britney Spears, TJ Fantini, Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling

It’s no secret that household names like Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Keri Russell, Christina Aguilera and Ryan Gosling’s “big break” came from being on The Mickey Mouse Club. But what’s never really been exposed before is how supportive and even protective the cast was (and still is!) of their success. A true result of the mutual respect, teamwork, and genuine camaraderie that was instilled in every Mouseketeer.

“I was not surprised by any of them,” DeLoach shares of watching her castmates break into global superstardom. “Throw a dart. I would not be surprised if anyone on this Zoom tomorrow wins an Oscar. We had so much belief in each other.”

Godboldo took that early belief quite literally: “I actually tried to be Christina Aguilera’s manager right after the show! I was 18, had no idea what I was doing, but I talked to her mom, got Tony [Lucca] to write some songs with me, and shopped her a record deal for a couple of months. That’s how passionate we were about each other.”

Reality TV Before the Internet

Because the cast members played themselves on camera alongside scripted sketches, fans felt an unusually intimate connection to them, years before reality television and social platforms made direct access the norm.

“We were a scripted show, but so much of it was real—we were Chase and Lindsey on camera,” says Hampton. “People really felt like they knew us.”

At the same time, the cast remains profoundly grateful that smartphones and social media weren’t around to chronicle those awkward adolescent missteps. Even if their teenage mischief was pretty wholesome. DeLoach laughs recalling former director Virgil Fabian’s unbothered reaction when young cast members went rogue: “Ryan and Justin would steal a golf cart and go for a joyride through the Disney lot! Virgil would just stand there and say, ‘Ah, they’ll be back. They have dance rehearsal in 10 minutes.’ We were allowed to just be kids.”

Passing the Torch: Thoughts on the Disney+ Reboot

With a new generation preparing to step into the Clubhouse, the original alumni have high hopes for what the incoming class can experience.

“I think this generation is missing that authentic connection with the artist,” Godboldo explains. “A platform to spotlight genuine talent and give kids at home someone to grow with is wonderful. I’m a big supporter.”

Adds Hampton: “The greatest gift of being on that show was meeting each other—growing up with kids from different races, religions, and backgrounds. It built community. I just hope 30 years from now, those new kids are gathering on a call just as happy to see each other as we are today.”

Keeping the Clubhouse Spirit Alive

The unbreakable bond forged on Soundstage 3 continues today through the Always In The Club Foundation, a non-profit chaired by Godboldo and directed by Hampton that provides youth mentorship, arts education, and emergency assistance to artists. The foundation’s new commemorative book, Always in the Club, documents the full oral history and untold archives of the cast.
