Trade! The Colts Are Sending Quenton Nelson to the Seahawks ...Middle East

The Seattle Seahawks looked like a reigning Super Bowl champion and current contender on Sunday night against the Kansas City Chiefs. When they welcome the Chicago Bears to town next Monday for a potential NFC playoff preview, they’ll have a new offensive lineman, Quenton Nelson.

According to Ian Rapoport, the Indianapolis Colts are trading eight-time Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seahawks. Seattle is sending a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round pick to the Colts in exchange for Nelson.

The Colts Are Sending Quenton Nelson to the Seahawks

The Colts are 2-5 and, as I wrote yesterday, feel like a team ready for a fire sale. With Chris Ballard fired and Ed Dodds leading the personnel department, Indianapolis has made the first of what feels like multiple moves between now and the November 10 trade deadline, dealing Nelson to Seattle.

Nelson is on an expiring contract, so the move makes sense for the Colts, who need draft capital after depleting their premium resources in last year’s Sauce Gardner trade. Nelson is among the league’s best guards and an easy first-name off the board for the Colts. Dodds worked in Seattle from 2007 to 2016, serving as Seahawks GM John Schneider’s senior personnel executive from 2015 to 2016, so an easy first call to make there.

Nelson started all 136 games he played for the Colts. He is in the final year of a four-year, $80 million contract extension he signed in September 2022.

This likely isn’t the final move we’ll see Dodds and the Colts make between now and the deadline. Running back Jonathan Taylor, defensive linemen DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart, and wide receiver Josh Downs are all names to watch for the next Colts move. The Bears are a potential trade partner for DeForest Buckner or Grover Stewart, given their need for defensive line upgrades.

For Seattle, the move costs them a third-rounder in 2027 and a fifth-rounder in 2028, which isn’t a terribly steep price to pay for Nelson, especially considering the Seahawks are in line to receive five compensatory picks in 2027 from the free agent losses of Boye Mafe, Kenneth Walker III, Tariq Woolen, and Coby Bryant, and Minnesota’s hiring of Nolan Teasley as their GM.

Acquiring Nelson, who plays left guard, now allows the Seahawks to move Grey Zabel to the right side, where he played in college. Even at 30, Nelson is still playing at an All-Pro level, giving the Seahawks more premium talent on their offensive line in their run at another Super Bowl title.
