Billy Crystal is known for his ability to connect with audiences and always get a laugh. The actor and comedian has debuted his autobiographical Broadway show, 860, sharing deeply personal stories with crowds.
The 78-year-old opened the play at New York City’s Imperial Theatre on Wednesday, Oct. 21. The 95-minute show begins with the loss of his Los Angeles home after the January 2025 Pacific Palisades wildfires.
Crystal told CBS News how important the house was to him and his wife, Janice Crystal.
“Yeah, it kept me young, that place,” he told the outlet.
According to the actor, nothing survived the fire. The 860 set is an exact replica of his home office.
“Yes, we’re fortunate to have this and have that, but that doesn’t take away the hurt. That doesn’t take away the loss,” Crystal said.
The name of the show is the street address of his beloved home. The When Harry Met Sally star said he was unsure of the title until he spoke to his close friend, Rob Reiner.
“He said, ‘What are you going to call it?’ I had these other titles, and the third one was 860. He went, ‘That’s the one. I love that. I like that.'”
In the same year he lost his house, he lost his friend. In December 2025, Rob Reiner and his wife, Michelle Singer Reiner, were killed in their home. Crystal shared that he still can’t understand the situation.
“No, it’s too big,” he explained. “It’s so insane, because we were together the night before. We said goodbye, like, late that night, 10:30 or something, at the party we were at together for the holidays, and then… what?!?”
Crystal was able to find humor when it was hardest to.
“That’s what I do! You have to, man. You got to, you got to … It’s a healer. It always has been that way. You know, we say when life gets tough, all you can do is laugh,” he said.
