Mets To Add Mariano Duncan To Coaching Staff ...Middle East

News by : (MLBtraderumors) -

The Mets are going to add Mariano Duncan to their major league coaching staff, reports Joel Sherman of The New York Post. Sherman doesn’t specify what title Duncan will have but says his duties will involve working with the position players in various facets. Separately, Mike Puma of The New York Post reports that Kevin Long is no longer under consideration for a role with the Mets. Chelsea Janes of SNY adds that Cubs assistant hitting coach John Mallee is also no longer in the mix.

Duncan, 63, spent over a decade in the big leagues as a player. From 1985 to 1997, he suited up for the Dodgers, Reds, Phillies, Yankees and Blue Jays. He was primarily a middle infielder but played every position on the diamond outside of the battery.

After his playing days ended, he pivoted to coaching. He has been in dugouts for more than 20 years now. He started in the early 2000s with some minor league work. He got his first major league coaching gig with the Dodgers in 2006 and held the first base coach job for that club through the 2010 season.

He then wound up back in the minors, serving as a hitting coach for farm clubs with various different franchises. He has been with the Mets recently. In 2019, he was hitting coach for the Rookie ball Kingsport Mets. After the minor leagues were cancelled in 2020, he served as bench coach for High-A Brooklyn in 2021. From 2022 to 2026, he was bench coach for Double-A Binghamton.

Turning to Long, he was let go by the Phillies earlier this month after spending many years as their hitting coach. It was then reported that he would talk with the Mets, who have a vacancy on their hitting staff. Hitting coach Troy Snitker is expected to return but director of hitting Jeff Albert is not. Puma says that Long and the Mets spoke about a role on the club but aren’t going to be working together. He will presumably be pursuing opportunities with other clubs. There was also reporting suggesting that the Mets were interested in Mallee but perhaps he will be staying with the Cubs.
