On Sept. 10, 2009, The CW finally brought The Vampire Diaries books to life. There were some major differences to the books, especially when it came to Elena Gilbert’s appearance, but Nina Dobrev created a character who shone on the screen.
We’d also be amiss if we didn’t mention her portrayal of Katherine Pierce, the 500-year-old vampire she was descended from and who looked exactly like her. Unless Katherine was pretending to be Elena, Dobrev brought subtle differences to the roles, so you knew who was on the screen.
As the show progressed, more and more doppelganger characters were added. Dobrev played Tatiana and Amara, bringing more detail to the doppelganger lore within the series. Yet, after six seasons, Dobrev left the show, and fans are still curious as to why.
The Reason Nina Dobrev Gave When Leaving ‘The Vampire Diaries’
At the time, Dobrev said that she believed her character of Elena, had gone as far as she could. Without room for growth — and since other doppelganger characters had been killed off — it made sense for her to leave the series at the end of her six-year contract.
This also gave her a chance to pursue other projects. She also wanted to avoid being typecast, and she would go on to have roles in the movie Flatliners and the CBS sitcom Fam, which lasted one season. She now has three projects coming up, It Happened One Summer, The Get Out, and You Deserve to Know, which stars her Vampire Diaries co-star, Paul Wesley.
Dobrev returned for the series finale of The Vampire Diaries. However, it was only for one episode, playing both Elena and Katherine.
The Real Reason Nina Dobrev Left the Show
In the book I Was Feeling Epic: An Oral History of The Vampire Diaries, Dobrev got candid with the real reason she left the show. It all came down to salary, especially with the extra work that she was doing.
Dobrev shared that she, Kat Graham, and Candice King were the three lowest-paid series regulars throughout the first two seasons. On top of that, she was only ever contracted to play Elena. Then suddenly, multiple other characters were added to her roster, and she ended up with double the workload. She said in the book, “I had to be on set for double the amount of time, I had to memorize double the amount of lines.”

All she wanted was to be compensated fairly for the extra work that she was doing, and The CW kept refusing. Eventually, Dobrev’s pay was upped to match that of her male co-stars, Wesley and Ian Somerhalder, but even that was viewed as being hurtful and unfair considering the extra work she was doing.
Julie Plec was told that the show could no longer include Katherine in storylines because of how heated the conversations got, and so she said that she would kill the character off just to use her again. In the end, Dobrev had enough, and once her contract was up, she decided to leave the series behind.
Even when she returned, it was only for one episode because of pay, although Dobrev makes it clear that it wasn’t about the money and was more about the principle. She was initially offered “five times less” than the pay she had while on the show during Season 6, and it was a hard negotiation to get it back up, allowing the series to wrap in a way that honored the character, the legacy, and the fans.
