NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins visited Champions Lane before the Alabama-Texas A&M matchup to sign a Memorandum of Understanding between their two agencies, modernizing data-sharing efforts to better support farmers.

“Our farmers, for a long time, have been surviving and really just surviving. And so we’re going to sign a memorandum of understanding that I believe is a massive step forward in supporting our farmers,” Rollins said. “Our MOU will advance USDA data modernization priorities by allowing regular technical exchanges, greater access to NASA data and technical reviews of using NASA data for field modeling and acreage estimation.”

Isaacman said that the signing in Tuscaloosa was part of NASA’s “Inspiration Tour” that brings together stakeholders to “connect the agency with the people, technologies, and organizations that drive American leadership in space.”

“When you think about two incredibly strong forces that are behind your space agency, the teams at Marshall Space Flight Center and the teams at Johnson Space Flight Center Texas, coming together on a field, it was an opportunity which we’re not going to pass up,” Isaacman said. “And it turns out our Secretary of Agriculture happened to be a pretty big Aggie fan.”

The flyover before the matchup was led by a F-5 fighter jet piloted by Isaacman, who was joined by Rollins as his “copilot.”

“You got Texas and Alabama coming together on the field,” Isaacman said. “This is like one of our Super Bowls right now. It’s taking place.”

During the game, U.S. Sen. Katie Britt, with Isaacson, Rollins and the flyover crew, presented University President Peter J. Mohler with a flag that flew aboard Artemis II around the moon, to recognize the University’s role in the mission.

According to the UA News Center, an “open-source software toolkit,” developed on-campus by Rohan Sood, an associate professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics, was used by researchers to calculate and design spacecraft trajectories during the Artemis I and II missions.

At the NASA Experience Zone, fans were able to engage with NASA team members and exhibits, which highlighted NASA’s efforts to return to the Moon. There was also information about internships with NASA for students.
