SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. (KEYT) - Cal Poly left no doubt who is the top women's volleyball program on the Central Coast.
The Mustangs (14-6, 10-0) completed their second sweep over UCSB (10-11, 6-4) in three days.
For just the second time in program history, Cal Poly has earned ten straight wins to start the Big West slate. The Mustangs are off to their best start in Big West play since 2017, when the program notched its singular perfect conference season (16-0) in its history, under now-associate head coach Sam Crosson.
Behind an early service run from Kendall Beshear and back-to-back blocks involving Breklyn Pulling and Alexis Haury, the Mustangs stretched the first-set margin to almost ten as they closed the frame 25-16.
The second set was the tightest of the night, featuring six ties and three lead changes. The Gauchos built an early 8-4 advantage, but Cal Poly clawed back and took its first lead of the frame at 17-16 on a Beshear kill and pulled ahead for good to eventually seal the set at 25-22.
The third set saw UC Santa Barbara jump out to a 7-2 lead, forcing the Mustangs to work from behind. Cal Poly chipped away and tied the score at 13-13, then took its first lead of the frame at 20-19. The Blue-Green rivals traded points down the stretch, with the score knotted at 23-23, before Fredrick delivered back-to-back match-clinching kills.
Cal Poly hit .358 as a team for the match, recording 45 kills against 11 errors on 95 attempts to tally its ninth total and second consecutive .300 clip effort. The Mustangs also gathered 43 assists, 36 digs, and seven total blocks (all block assists) in the win.
Fredrick tallied 13 kills, two service aces, six digs, and one block assist. Beshear matched her offense and went a step further on 14 kills (.419 hitting), one ace, four digs, and a block assist. Charlotte Kelly was lethally efficient with nine kills on 12 attempts (.667) and three block assists.
Haury supplied the offense with 38 assists to go along with three digs and a block assist. Elif Hurriyet anchored the back row with 12 digs, while Vanacht chipped in five digs and one assist. Pulling, fresh off her record-setting performance in Santa Barbara on Thursday, contributed five kills and four block assists.
Over the two-match weekend against UC Santa Barbara, Fredrick totaled 27 kills, 16 digs, and three service aces across six sets, hitting .309. Beshear added 22 kills, nine digs, and two aces while hitting .447. Pulling was remarkable with 18 kills on 27 attempts (.593) and five block assists. Haury averaged 11.67 assists per set over the weekend, and Hurriyet averaged 3.17 digs per set.
Protecting a golden ten-match win streak and five-match lead on the Big West Championship field, the Mustangs return to action next week away at UC Irvine on Friday at 6 p.m. and UC San Diego on Saturday at 5 p.m.
For UCSB Auburn Tomkinson led the team offensively, notching a double-digit 11 kills and totaling 11.5 points. Gabi Martinez followed up with 10 kills while picking up four digs. Cortni Youngblood dug 12 digs for the highest count of the match. Avery Gibbs landed seven kills and hit .357, while Thomas went five for seven to hit .714. Milan Rex pushed 20 assists to average 6.7 per set.
UP NEXTThe Gauchos head back on the road to take on UC San Diego and UC Irvine. They'll face the Tritons at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30 and the Anteaters at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31.
