Marion Ross is celebrating her 98th birthday today, more than four decades after she became one of TV’s favorite moms.
The Happy Days star was born October 25, 1928, and she has been enjoying a quieter life away from Hollywood in recent years. Her son, actor Jim Meskimen, gave fans a sweet glimpse of her ahead of the big day, posting a throwback video of the two of them working on a voice audition together, in which she tries to say “Poughkeepsie.”
He also shared an update during an October 17 appearance on Popp Talk, saying his mom is doing well at home and still enjoying life.
That fits the attitude Ross has shared about growing older. “I just do whatever I want to do, and I’m free,” she said in a video Meskimen posted several years ago.
Ross was born Marian Ellen Ross in Watertown, Minnesota. At 13, she changed the spelling of her first name to “Marion” because she thought it looked better and would read nicely on a theater marquee.
She made her film debut in 1953’s Forever Female, and her TV career started the same year, with a role as an Irish maid.
Her big break came in 1974, when she was cast as Marion Cunningham, the warm and steady mom to Richie and Joanie on Happy Days. She appeared in all but two episodes of the series’ 10-season run, which ended in 1984. She later played Mrs. C again on the spinoff Joanie Loves Chachi and in a voice role on Family Guy.
Younger fans may also know her as Drew’s mother on The Drew Carey Show and as grandma Bernice Forman on That ’70s Show.
Off-screen, Ross is a proud mother of two. She shared many years with her late partner, actor Paul Michael.
