The New York Knicks’ feel-good run to their first title in 53 years didn’t last long.
Sincing his team won it all in a quick five-game Finals series against the San Antonio Spurs, team governor James Dolan has made a series of bizarre decisions that, taken together, will likely spell karmic doom for what is still probably the most talented team in the Eastern Conference.
Beyond some shenanigans during the Finals series and a weirdly bitter speech at New York’s victory parade, Dolan seemed to be flying a bit under-the-radar last season. He was allegedly distracted by his Sphere concert arena outside Las Vegas.
Now, though, he’s made himself the story again, leading to some bizarre decisions.
Dolan refused to go into the second luxury tax apron to re-sign sixth man center Mitchell Robinson, who left in free agency for a direct Atlantic Division competitor in the Boston Celtics. He’s also gotten the Knicks into a bit of a war of words with All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns and starting shooting guard Josh Hart, supposedly shutting down contract extension negotiations for the time being after the two sides were said to be far apart.
Knicks tickets were also so exorbitantly priced heading into their 2026-27 season that fans practically revolted. Per ESPN/The Associated Press, the team subsequently paused home game sales and blamed the issue on “a mistake in our pricing.”
This latest Dolan drama is incredibly damning if true.
New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson talks to his coach and father Rick Brunson during an opening night ring ceremony. Jalen has his ring. Rick, not so much.Knicks Ice Out Coaches, Pull Cruel Prank on Longtime Garden Employees
League sources recently informed Joe Vardon of The Athletic that the Knicks’ assistant coaches — and, potentially, head coach Mike Brown — were gifted with empty ring boxes instead of championship rings in a ring night ceremony Tuesday, ahead of a clash with the suddenly star-studded Philadelphia 76ers. New York sources told Vardon that several Madison Square Garden employees wouldn’t even get actual rings.
Every Knicks player (including ex-New York deep-bench center Ariel Hokpurti, now with the Philadelphia 76ers) got their champion ring during the ceremony. Knicks executives Leon Rose and William Wesley did, too.
Last month, the team orchestrated a fake championship ring email operation, sending those Garden employees a mass email that claimed it wanted to fit people for future rings — but it was actually a poorly-considered phishing test. Employees who clicked on the offer were instead mandated to attend a cybersecurity class.
But that was Vardon’s report yesterday. When it leaked, it appears the Knicks pivoted. Stefan Bondy of the New York Post reports that now, 275 rings in total — worth $3.7 million — will be distributed to staff.
“The company had previously sent out an email to its corporate team as a simulation of a phishing attack designed to strengthen our security against hackers,” a Garden spokesman informs Bondy. “MSG was recently hacked and extorted using an employee login and password obtained through a similar phishing attack. Using the rings as a lure to gain employees attention was an unfortunate mistake.”
So, if you’re counting, that’s two “mistakes” after severe public backlash.
A league source tells Bondy that top assistant coaches Chris Jent, Rick Brunson, and Brendan O’Connor will all get their actual title rings “shortly.”
This behavior is very strange. The Knicks are the second-most valuable NBA team out there, with Forbes reporting the franchise is now worth $12.6 billion. Dolan is a billionaire. Why skimp on celebrating the championship infrastructure that helped restore basketball glory to the Mecca?
Beyond perhaps some psychological disruption to players and staffers, this shouldn’t really — on paper — affect New York’s championship upside. But the vibes are now officially off in the City That Never Sleeps. In a far more loaded Eastern Conference than last year, can the Knicks survive this strange saga to make a second straight Finals? Time will tell.
