Jenna Ortega is getting candid about her longtime experience with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), including the daily rituals she has followed since she was just seven years old.
In a new cover story for Vogue’s November issue, the 24-year-old Wednesday star opened up about how the condition has affected her life since childhood and the ways she’s learned to navigate it.
Ortega recalled realizing something was different about how her mind worked when she was growing up. While her siblings were still sleeping, she’d wake up early to complete a very specific morning routine before school.

At the time, she didn’t fully understand why she felt compelled to perform these actions. However, after looking back on her life, Ortega eventually recognized them as early signs of OCD.
According to the International OCD Foundation, OCD is defined as “a serious and often debilitating mental health disorder that affects people of all ages and walks of life, and occurs when a person gets caught in a cycle of obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that trigger intensely distressing feelings. Compulsions are behaviors an individual engages in to attempt to get rid of the obsessions and/or decrease distress.

(Photo by Dominik Bindl/WireImage)Ortega is still actively managing her obsessions. She revealed that when she’s tired, jet-lagged, or anxious about a new project, she’ll “just bite the bullet and do the routine,” which includes repeating the phrase “take care” numerous times, stepping on set with her left foot first, and holding her breath while she counts to 71.
While navigating the condition hasn’t always been easy, Ortega has explored different ways, like therapy and medication, to balance her symptoms. She also found that approaching some of her rituals like a game helped “to take some of the pressure off.”
But interestingly enough, Ortega admitted that the same career that sometimes heightens her anxiety has also provided an unexpected source of relief. Being in front of the camera forces her to focus on the present moment and reminds her to breathe when thoughts and compulsions creep in.

During a 2025 Vogue interview, she revealed that she’s maintained the same routine for seven years, including counting to specific numbers while showering and putting on clothes in a particular order.
By sharing these experiences, Ortega is actually giving a glimpse into a condition that’s often misunderstood and misrepresented in the media. It shows how something that may appear small to an outsider carries a much greater emotional weight for the person experiencing it.
