Many fans might be avidly looking forward to the release of the latest chapter in The Exorcist series, but one person who isn’t at all on board with the new sequel is the original star of The Exorcist, Ellen Burstyn.
Speaking with Variety, Burstyn, who famously appeared as despondent actress Chris MacNeil in the 1973 landmark horror film, took a dismissive view of the upcoming sequel, The Exorcist: Martyrs, arriving in 2027.
“Isn’t there enough already of the Exorcist thing?” the 93-year-old actress told the outlet. “It’s enough already.”
One of the few surviving cast members from the original Exorcist, Burstyn later reprised her role for the ill-fated 2023 sequel, The Exorcist: Believer, which earned almost universally negative reviews from fans and critics alike.
Given the lack of success of Believer, the celebrated horror studio Blumhouse began developing a new reboot of the series with their upcoming film, The Exorcist: Martyrs.
Starring Scarlett Johansson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Diane Lane, Jacobi Jupe, Laurence Fishburne and John Leguizamo, The Exorcist: Martyrs follows an NYPD police detective (Johansson) who uncovers a sinister connection to a serial killer from 13 years prior.
Investigating the case further, the detective soon realizes the killer’s reign of terror might have a possibly demonic background, leading her to enlist the help of a former prison chaplain who heard the killer’s final confession.
The latest entry in the Exorcist series, The Exorcist: Martyrs is currently set for release on March 12, 2027. It marks the seventh overall installment in the Exorcist franchise.
Martyrs will be written and directed by Mike Flanagan, the prolific horror filmmaker behind several Stephen King adaptations (including Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep and Prime Video’s Carrie) as well as various other independent projects like the critically acclaimed Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass.
