Built in 1937 and designed by architect Robert D. Farquhar, the Owlwood Estate in Los Angeles has been the home of many celebrities, business owners and artists.
Located in Holmby Hills, an ultra-exclusive, affluent neighborhood on the Westside of Los Angeles, the Tuscan-style estate has been owned by many — including businessman Charles H. Quinn and his wife Florence Letts Quinn, film executive Joseph M. Schenck, actor Tony Curtis, Cher, and businessman Roland Arnall. In September 2016, the Owlwood Estate was sold for $90 million to an investment firm, making it the third highest residential sale in Los Angeles history at the time. The home returned to the market in 2017, and was listed at $180 million. Four years later, it was back in the market again at a reduced rate of $88 million.

Sonny & Cher, one of the most popular music duos in the 1960s and 1970s, bought the Owlwood Estate in 1974 for $750,000 from actor Tony Curtis. The couple lived together in the 12,000 square foot mansion that included a tennis court, a pool with a separate pool house, fountains, a guard tower, acres of manicured lawns and gardens, a theater, an elevator and 22 rooms for two years, before selling it after they divorced. At the time it was built, it was considered the largest house in Los Angeles.
When Cher sold the property in 1976 to Chase and Ralph Mishkin, they renamed it to “Owlwood”, in honor of the owls that lived in the towering trees that surrounded the property.

Sonny Bono and Cher rose to fame as Sonny & Cher in the mid-1960s with their string of popular singles such as “Baby Don’t Go,” “I Got You Babe” and “The Beat Goes On.” The two began their music careers as R&B backup singers for Phil Spector. They released their debut album, Look At Us, in 1965, which established them as major figures in the folk-rock scene. As a duo, they were nominated for two Grammy Awards and sold over 40 million records worldwide.
Their career faltered a bit in the late 1960s, but the duo returned in the 1970s with two studio albums released under MCA/Kapp Records, and achieved another hit song, “A Cowboy’s Work is Never Done.” That decade, they also transitioned into television, starring in popular variety programs like Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour and The Sonny & Cher Show.
Following their divorce in 1975 and the end of their professional relationship in 1977, Cher went on to achieve a highly successful career as a solo singer and actress, while Bono was eventually elected to Congress as a Republican representative for California. Bono passed away in 1998 at 62 years old after suffering massive head injuries from a skiing accident.
