Surveillance video caught the moment a woman was shot in broad daylight while driving with her husband and kids in an apparent road rage incident that left her fighting for her life on Thursday.
The shots rang out around 9:30 a.m. near West 47th Street and South Western Avenue in Brighton Park when a gray car pulled up beside a vehicle carrying the woman and her family. Someone inside the gray car opened fire, hitting the mother in the head, according to police.
Surveillance video captured by businesses on the block that was shared with NBC Chicago showed the incident unfolding.
A minivan can be seen followed closely by what 15th Ward Alderman Raymond Lopez says was a driver enraged by something that happened several blocks back.
“Once those vehicles came to this red light, the offended individual felt it was his right to open fire on the car,” Lopez said. “To follow someone for a mile because you’re angry at them, to want to take a gun and resolve that anger with a bullet, is nonsensical, stupid and senseless.”
A 32-year-old woman who was driving with her husband and two children in the car was hit by one of the bullets and as of Thursday night was still fighting for her life.
“No one should have to live in fear because you’re driving on the road and someone behind you is upset,” Lopez said.
Residents who spoke with NBC Chicago echoed the alderman’s calls to bring the person responsible to justice.
“Imagine the horror and trauma that those children are going to be dealing with for the rest of their lives. Regardless of what the outcome is, today, literally they saw their mom shot in the head,” Lopez said.
The woman who was shot underwent surgery at a local hospital, according to the alderman.
In a Facebook post, Ald. Raymond Lopez said witnesses identified a gray four-door Toyota Scion with a rear bike rack as the shooter’s vehicle. The driver allegedly fled south on Western Avenue after the shooting.
No arrests have been made as of Thursday evening, according to police.
An investigation remains ongoing.
