How the Heck Are the Bears Gonna Stop A.J. Brown? ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

A.J. Brown is one of the NFL’s best wide receivers.

The 29-year-old is a three-time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champ. He has six 1,000-yard receiving campaigns on his résumé and has hit the milestone in each of his last four seasons. If Brown does it again this season, he will do so for a third different team. Brown has 1,000-yard seasons with the Tennessee Titans (2019, 2020) and Philadelphia Eagles (2022-25) before joining the New England Patriots in an offseason trade. In short, the guy is a terror to cover.

So … how are the Bears going to stop him?

Well, for starters, I don’t know if I’d have Jaylon Johnson or Tyrique Stevenson covering him on an island — especially after seeing this hit my timeline:

Most yards per reception allowed among CB this season (min 100 pass snaps) Sauce Gardner 21.7 Tyrique Stevenson 18.9 Cor’Dale Flott 18.8 Mike Sainristil 17.7 Jaylon Johnson 17.5 t.co/GZIwhzGVRF

That said, you can’t just hide Johnson or Stevenson. Johnson has played at a Pro Bowl level before and remains confident in his skills. I won’t bet against Johnson. Firstly, because I know the moment I do will be exactly when he turns back the clock and plays like the player we know he can be. And secondly, his willingness to play through injuries last year has earned him some leeway from me. To be clear, it isn’t a free pass. But toughing it out down the stretch last year earned some grace.

As for Stevenson, he is due for a good stretch. I’ve never seen a Bears cornerback whose play had such extreme highs and lows. Coming into this season, I hoped that Stevenson’s play would level out. Not only has that not happened, but injuries have thrown things for a loop. That said, I maintain that Stevenson is due for a hot streak. Why not start it on Thursday Night Football?

How the Bears Can Slow Down A.J. Brown on Thursday Night Football

A.J. Brown is too good a receiver to just flat-out be stopped. Once you come to grips with the fact that he’ll get his, it makes it easier to understand what needs to happen for the Bears on the defensive side of the ball in Week 7.

Simply put, this defense needs to make sure that Brown doesn’t beat them with big plays. Limit his deep patterns by combining sticky coverage from a cornerback and safety help over the top. Don’t let him get frisky over the middle. This is where strong play from the linebackers and safeties is crucial. And if defensive linemen can’t get to the quarterback, they need to be able to get their arms up and bat down passes. After seeing the type of chaos Kyler Gordon can bring as a blitzing cornerback, maybe the best way to stop Brown is by harassing quarterback Drake Maye with endless pressures from every angle.

This Patriots offense has been on a roll lately, averaging a shade above 33 points per game in its last three games since suffering a 35-6 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 3. That said, this group can be slowed down — it’s just going to take a team effort. With the Bears coming off a win against the Falcons that encapsulated everything that you’d expect a team win to be, I look forward to seeing how they approach this challenge.
