Former Chicago Bears safety Kevin Byard III makes a guarantee before the New England Patriots take on his former team.
“I can almost guarantee you, this Thursday night game, Ben Johnson is going to have some tricks up his sleeve,” Byard told reporters this week, via WEEI. “It’s a prime-time game. He’s going to want to show off his great plays and expertise. [I’m] definitely looking forward to that.”
If anyone in the Patriots locker room knows what type of fiendish things that the Bears head coach is cooking, it is Byard. The veteran safety was a Bears captain the last two years and an All-Pro who practiced against Johnson’s offense in his final season with the team. There was hope and optimism that Byard would return to Chicago, but no deal came about. Instead, the Bears pivoted to sign Coby Bryant in free agency. Bryant’s deal opened the door for Byard to join the Patriots, reuniting him with Mike Vrabel, who coached him with the Tennessee Titans.

With that in mind, I’d opt against testing him on Thursday Night Football. That guy knows too much about how this offense operates, and I’d hate to see him in a position to use it to his advantage.

“I love Kevin Byard and what he brings to the table,” Johnson said, via The Athletic. “You can tell he really fits their defense well in terms of the communication and what they’re asking him to do.”
The Bears Are Doing Just Fine Without Kevin Byard
This feels like one of those “all is well that ends well” scenarios for all parties.
Byard is back with a familiar coach and on a winning team. The Patriots are 4-2 as they enter their showdown with the Bears at Soldier Field. Meanwhile, the Bears are also 4-2. Just like the Patriots. Sure, Byard’s replacement is on injured reserve. But the rookie safety brought in to help replace what the team lost with Byard’s departure is playing well. It’s why you don’t really hear folks asking how Byard or fellow safety free agent departure Jaquan Brisker are playing on their new teams.
KEVIN BYARD MAKES A BOLD PREDICTION ABOUT CALEB WILLIAMS’ FUTURE
Dillon Thieneman has been fine as a rookie. His aggressive play style and knack for recording splash plays in key moments have been fun to watch. Seeing Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen use Thieneman in various defensive alignments sheds light on why the team was willing to move on without Byard. Chicago’s front office and coaching staff took a gamble that the speed and athleticism of a young player like Thieneman would make up for losing Byard’s veteran know-how. So far, so good.
To be clear, Kevin Byard is still a quality player. He is still highly respected by his peers, landing a spot on the NFL’s Top 100 players list that dropped this past summer. Byard, who was a captain the last two seasons in Chicago, is an easy player to root for … and I can start doing that again after he and the Patriots leave town.
