Tonight’s Bears vs. Patriots Thursday Night Football game should be awesome. Two of the NFL’s top young quarterbacks are set to go head-to-head, and both have been playing very well lately. Caleb Williams is fresh off winning Player of the Week honors after missing a few weeks with a hamstring injury. After a brutal game in Jacksonville, Drake Maye has responded by throwing 10 touchdowns to just one interception over his last three games, all Patriots wins.
Not only have these two been good recently, but they also had outstanding sophomore campaigns last season. All Maye did was finish second in the MVP voting while leading the Patriots to a Super Bowl appearance. He’s gotten a little flak for playing a light schedule last season, but he did what a good quarterback should do with one: win and perform at a high level. As for Caleb, Year 1 with Ben Johnson saw the Bears win 11 games and reach the Divisional Round, where they suffered an overtime loss to the Rams.

Despite the massive success these two young quarterbacks have achieved over the last year and a half or so, it seems like a big chunk of football fans (mostly on social media) have a hard time acknowledging that both are indeed very good.
For whatever reason, the 2024 quarterback class seems to spark so much hostile debate over who’s good and who’s not, and every answer has to be definitive. And not only that, if you think one is the best, you automatically have to think everyone else is terrible and try to bring them down. Saying “Caleb Williams is awesome” in a social media post doesn’t have to be seen as a knock on Drake Maye. And vice versa. Because it’s not. Patriots fans can think Drake Maye is better without ripping Caleb Williams. And Bears fans can believe Caleb Williams is the best in the 2024 class without criticizing Maye.
What Rivalry? Here’s What Drake Maye and Caleb Williams Had to Say About Each Other Before TNF
We don’t need to re-run the 2024 draft order and debate who should have gone where any time anyone plays well or poorly. I’ll share a little secret. Both the Bears and Patriots got their picks right. Both are thrilled with their selections. The Bears wouldn’t take Maye over Caleb, and I doubt the Patriots would take Caleb over Maye. Both organizations are in a great spot!
Drake Maye supporters don’t need to look at a dominant 30-for-36 performance in a win over Atlanta and spin the narrative that Caleb actually played badly because his ADOT was low. Caleb Williams supporters don’t need to downplay Maye’s outstanding performance over the last three weeks by talking about his slow start to the season. It’s ok to admit that both of these quarterbacks are good, and likely will be for a long time!
I swear on the ghost of Mike Ditka, if I see another one of these graphs skewed to fit a narrative or make a 30-for-36 performance look actually bad, I’m going to lose it. First, It’s Caleb not taking the easy stuff and trying to do too much.
“He’ll never win if he completes less than 60% of his passes. He needs to play within the system and not play hero ball”
Ok, cool, well, through three games, Caleb Williams leads the NFL in completion percentage at 72.5%, and in his first game back from a hamstring injury, he completed 83.3% of his passes!
“Yeah, well, he’s a checkdown merchant! He’ll never win if he doesn’t push the ball downfield and make plays with his arm”
**Insert banging head against a wall GIF here**
Posting what appears as friendly fire about very low ADOT in 1 of 38 games Caleb Williams had started — and the only one coming off a hammy where part of the design was scheming shorter stuff because he wasn’t 100% as elusive coming back from injury and deep routes take time to… pic.twitter.com/cN0ZR2Jd1a
— Kirsten Tanis (@Kirsten_Tanis1) October 21, 2026Somewhere along the line, a section of people stopped actually watching these football games and using the eye test and instead just opted for advanced stats. Guess what. If you look hard enough, you can find just about any advanced stat you want to fit a narrative. Anyone who watched Caleb Williams on Sunday knows how good he was. Not to mention, as the post above mentions, the Bears clearly game-planned around Caleb and his not-yet-100% hamstring.
It’s funny, just about anyone who watches film and breaks down football for a living will tell you that Caleb Williams played one of his best games as a pro on Sunday. But VikesFan74 or GoPackGo412 on X, who didn’t actually watch the game, will fire back with a chart about how he actually played terribly.
And I know that for the most part (like most things in life these days), it’s a loud, vocal minority that’s getting their takes seen online because hot takes generate reactions, and people seem to know that. But still, it’s just so annoying that these lazy, clickbait takes keep getting the attention that they don’t deserve.
I’m sorry, can you tell I’m venting here a bit?
October 16, 2025; Atlanta, Georgia, USA; Chicago quarterback Caleb Williams (18) eludes the Atlanta Falcons rush during the second quarter at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brett Davis-Imagn ImagesOh, and here’s another revelation. One quarterback will win tonight, and one quarterback will lose (run to place a “tie” bet on this one, knowing my luck). Whoever loses doesn’t automatically have to be called bad. And whoever wins doesn’t necessarily have to be called better than the other. It’s one game on a Thursday night in October. These two quarterbacks will probably square off several more times in their NFL careers. They’ll both win some, and they’ll both lose some. October 26 isn’t the end-all-be-all result of this rivalry.
So, I guess what I’m getting at is that instead of deciding who’s better RIGHT NOW, let’s have fun watching two really good young quarterbacks who will likely be fixtures in the NFL for the next decade plus. Caleb Williams is going to win a lot of games in his NFL career. So is Drake Maye. They’ll both probably beat each other a couple of times. We don’t have to declare who is definitively the better quarterback yet, because there’s still plenty of time for that to play out. Get excited, everyone, we have one heck of a quarterback matchup on tap for tonight!
