Senior Kamal Muhammad was cut from the University of Tennessee roster and will not be competing with the Volunteers this season.
Muhammad originally committed to the University of Virginia after taking a gap year to reclassify to the class of 2022. He competed for the Cavaliers during his freshman and sophomore seasons at dual meets, but did not compete at the ACC Championship either year.
He did not race collegiately during the 2024-2025 season, swimming in a few club meets, before committing to Tennessee for the final two years of his career.
In his junior year at Tennessee last season, he made the SEC Championship team. There he set a personal best 42.98 in the 100 free to finish 26th and a season best 46.08 in the 100 fly prelims to finish 17th in prelims before swimming 46.87 to take 23rd in finals. He also finished 34th in the 50 free at 19.82, a little off his best of 19.61 from the Tennessee Invite earlier in the season.
He wrapped up his year at the Tennessee Last Chance Invite, where he was off his SEC times and missed earning an NCAA Invite.
Muhammad told SwimSwam that he was cut from the program due to “poor performance” at SECs.
Tennessee Head Coach Matt Kredich said that the program was not a “good fit for him”, going on to say, “We had a difference in our belief systems around training. I respect, but either don’t agree with or don’t understand a lot of his beliefs and didn’t see a path forward for him in our program.”
Muhammad did confirm that he was able to keep his scholarship and is still intending to graduate from the University of Tennessee. In the meantime, Muhammad said, “I’ve been training alone recently- not preferred but I’ll do what I have to do. The goal right now is having fun and getting better. My next meet is the Short Course World Trials in Westmont.”
The USA Swimming Short Course World Championship Trials kick off next Wednesday, October 28th, and will be how athletes earn qualification to the SC World Championships in Beijing in December.
Tennessee will swim their 2nd meet of the season tomorrow at the 6th CSL match, where they are aiming for an automatic berth to the Championship Final. The Volunteers are gearing up for what could be a very strong season with high hopes for NCAAs. Both the men’s and women’s teams ranked #4 in SwimSwam’s preseason Power Rankings.
