ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Person in Crisis team in Rochester has been responding to 988 crisis calls for five years.

Team leaders held a community engagement session at the Stardust Ballroom on Backus Street on Wednesday evening, where neighbors and community partners shared their thoughts on what the team is doing well and what could be improved.

The team is receiving new funding through New York’s Daniel’s Law, which leaders said will be used to hire new peer navigators.

“We will have peers that are able to come in the community with us and use their lived experience really to connect and engage with individuals around the work that we do, so that we can continue to walk individuals through their crises, make sure that they’re connected with the appropriate resources, and follow up as we need to,” said Alia Henton-Williams, manager of the Rochester Crisis Intervention Services.

Anyone experiencing a crisis can contact the Person in Crisis team by calling 988 or chatting with a 988 specialist online.

To speak with a specialist, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline can be found here.
