FAA investigating after another blown tire incident at O'Hare ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

The Federal Aviation Administration has announced it will investigate the blown tire incident that shook up passengers and tied up a runway for more than an hour Tuesday at O’Hare International Airport.

Tuesday’s incident at O’Hare is one of several that has happened at the airport in recent months, and while the incidents aren’t necessarily related, the FAA has said it will look into the continuing issue.

As for passengers who were on the plane, it was a harrowing experience to have after a long flight.

“All of a sudden, we came to land and as the tires were touching, there was a big pound, really loud,” said John Abbate, a Woodale man who was on board the plane. “I have been through some rough landings, but this was rough.”

Firefighters helped take Abbate and the other passengers off the plane using an emergency stairway. They were then bussed to the terminal

Now the FAA is looking into this latest incident of a blown tire at O’Hare International, the sixth this summer.

“Statistically, this a really unusual,” said Joe Schweiterman, an aviation expert and transportation professor at DePaul University.

He wonders if different landing patterns are being used or if there is debris on the runways that may be triggering these events.

“All this needs to be investigated,” he said.

Pilots and air traffic control Tuesday talked about the possibility of a problem with the plane’s brakes.

Erik Baker, a former Navy Safety Director and now the Director of Graduate Studies at Lewis University said that scenario makes sense.

“That brake situation could seize the wheel, cause the wheel not to spin,” he said. “When that happens, you will have a blowout.”

But Baker said that passengers have little to worry about in a blown tire situation.

“The nose landing gear has two tires…each of the wing landing gear has four tires, so there is built in redundancy,” he said.

Baker said the aviation industry is built on principles of proactive safety. He said the airline, the airport and the airplane manufacturer will all be involved in the investigation.

“Airports are built for this, and airliners are built for this,” he said. “It’s not something that you would be concerned for as a passenger.”

American Airlines confirmed that the plane will be removed from service and will be inspected.

Even after the scary incident, Abbate said he would not think twice about flying again.

“This was a mishap,” he said. “These things happen.”
