Anatomy of a mass murder: What happened inside a Mundelein home ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

The small red frame home on Wellington Avenue in suburban Mundelein became a house of horror Sunday, just as the Chicago Bears game was kicking off.

Neighbors said they thought the firecracker noise was part of gameday festivities. It wasn’t.

They were gunshots that we now know ended the lives of four people, and then the shooter became fatality number five on his own. All of the dead knew each other well, and most were blood relatives.

The man at the trigger of the tragedy was 51-year-old Bryan Schmidt. Police said he committed a mass murder/suicide in the home that he owned with his parents.

Schmidt killed himself in the home with a shot to the mouth, police and the Lake County Coroner’s Office said. But he took his own life only after killing four people who were closest to him.

His 77-year-old mother, Rebecca, and 80-year-old father, James, were murdered; both of them were found with multiple gunshot wounds.

Mundelein residents thought they heard firecrackers during a Bears game; it was a fatal shooting

Bryan Schmidt killed his 22-year-old son, Maclaine, with a gunshot wound to the head.

And he shot his longtime girlfriend, Nicole Heiser, 37, who also sustained a gunshot wound to the head. All of them were murdered with a handgun.

Most recently, Bryan Schmidt was managing a veterinary clinic in nearby Libertyville. The feline-only clinic was in business for years and operated by his father and mother, who were well-regarded, longtime veterinarians in the northern suburbs.

The veterinary clinic closed without explanation last spring, according to state records obtained by the NBC Chicago investigative team.

NBC 5 Investigates found nothing in Bryan Schmidt’s history that would signal a coming violent meltdown.

There were none of the typical red flags: criminal charges, serious financial problems such as bankruptcies, court orders of protection or hospitalizations for mental illness.

Even after the horrific bloodshed on Sunday, neighbors didn’t recall ongoing arguments or police calls, and friends haven’t described Bryan Schmidt as a ticking time bomb in the Mundelein family.

But we’ve learned in Bryan Schmidt’s car, police found a suicide note. They said “detectives located multiple suicide notes left by Bryan on scene and in his vehicle.” What is written in the notes they aren’t revealing, and police say they are still trying to determine “any possible motive for the shooting.”

The reason police found the house of horror in the first place was because the only surviving family member was unable to reach family members all day Sunday.

Forty-four-year-old Kimberly Schmidt, also a veterinarian, in northern California, contacted Mundelein police, asking that they look in on her parents. Now, Kimberly Schmidt is planning funerals after an unthinkable outcome of that well-being check.
