ROCHESTER, N.Y. — MotorTrend has named the Mercedes-Benz S-Class as its 2027 Car of the Year.
“We’re proud to announce that MotorTrend’s 2027 Car of the Year is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class,” Ed Loh, head of editorial at MotorTrend, said.
“It has everything you would want in a vehicle -all the power, all the luxury, the wood, the metal. You’ve heard of heated seats. This car has heated seatbelts,” Loh said. “Mercedes is always trying to iterate and evolve and make things just a little bit better. And you know, you get in a car, and the seat may be warm, but the seatbelt is cold, so they fixed that.”
MotorTrend evaluated six criteria for the award: value, safety, fuel economy, engineering excellence, advancement and design, and performance. The S-Class is powered by a 4-liter twin flat plane crank turbo V-8 engine and has a base price of $114,000, with some models costing more than $200,000.
“When you’re talking about a car that is as much as a house, for a lot of people this is completely out of reach,” News10 NBC’s Deanna Dewberry said.
“Yes, it is on the more expensive end of the vehicle spectrum; the technology is outstanding. And historically, technology that debuts on this car, eventually makes it into the driveways of a lot of other vehicles,” Loh said.
While most people may not be able to buy the S-Class, features like its integration of AI and autonomous technology are expected to become more common in other vehicles.

The best deals are often found in the six days between the day after Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
