In the 1970s, the radio was filled with one-hit wonders, but not all of them stood the test of time. Fifty-four years after its release, King Harvest’s “Dancing in the Moonlight” remains a soft rock classic that is still recognized by fans from multiple generations.
Written by Sherman Kelly for his band Boffolongo, the song became a massive hit when King Harvest recorded it in 1972. With its upbeat melody and feel-good lyrics about happiness in life, the mellow track captured the peace-and-love-filled vibe of the early 1970s and became an AM radio staple, reaching No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.
More than five decades later, Collider ranked “Dancing in the Moonlight“ on its September 2026 list of the 10 best classic rock one-hit wonders, noting that it is “just a nice song.”
King Harvest’s cover of “Dancing in the Moonlight” came after Kelly’s brother, Wells, who was the drummer for King Harvest, shared the Boffolongo song with his bandmates, according to the music site Elpee.
Sherman Kelly’s inspiration for the song was far from happy and breezy. He penned “Dancing in the Moonlight” after he was brutally assaulted by a gang in St. Croix. While recovering from serious injuries, he turned his thoughts to the idea of a carefree existence.
“I envisioned an alternate reality,” he once shared, according to Songfacts. “The dream of a peaceful and joyful celebration of life.
In an interview with Classic Bands, King Harvest founding member Rod Novak explained why Kelly felt that he had to create something positive after being left for dead and having to undergo multiple facial surgeries.
“It really changed his life,” the saxophone player shared. “He was kind of in quite a negative place for quite a while. He wrote that song as kind of a therapy to just get himself out of that head. ‘Dancing In The Moonlight’ is a real uplifting, positive tune.”
Novak also once explained why the song remains so magical decades later.
“Young/old, conservative/liberal, rich/poor, Black, Brown, or White…the longing for harmony is almost universal,” he said in an interview posted by Medium. “I think ‘Dancing In the Moonlight’ evokes a feeling of well-being in its listeners and creates a vision of a life that is magical and a desire which is timeless. Positivity is a very attractive force.”
Decades after its release, “Dancing in the Moonlight” still feels like magic, a timeless classic that never gets old.
