The Astros are in the market for a general manager after moving on from Dana Brown in late August. Brewers assistant general manager Matt Kleine has emerged as a candidate, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
Owner Jim Crane said after Brown’s departure that the team wouldn’t dive into the search for a replacement until after the season. Minimal info about the process has trickled out so far. Nightengale suggested at the time of Brown’s firing that assistant GM Charles Cook and senior advisor Jeff Bagwell could be among the internal candidates in the mix. Robert Murray of FanSided noted the possibility of Houston considering options in Milwaukee’s front office, including Kleine.
Kleine has been in the Brewers organization for nearly 20 years. He got his start as an associate scout in 2007. He steadily worked his way up the ladder, reaching vice president of baseball operations at the end of the 2019 season. Milwaukee promoted Kleine to assistant GM in 2023. Will Hudgins and Karl Mueller also received AGM promotions. The trio has served in their roles under GM Matt Arnold for the past three seasons.
Houston is currently looking to fill leadership vacancies at the team level and the executive level. The club parted with manager Joe Espada last week. Espada finished the season on an expiring contract and wasn’t expected to be back with the team. It’s unclear how much of a say the new GM will have in the coaching hire, but that figures to be part of the interview discussions as Crane and company look for a new top exec.
The Astros snuck into the playoffs on the final day of the regular season with an 81-81 record. They narrowly edged the Rangers to win the AL West. Houston was promptly swept by the White Sox in the Wild Card round. The club has reached the postseason in three of the past four seasons, but has failed to win a series in that stretch.
