The cafeteria and patient kitchen at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood failed a health inspection after more than 200 live cockroaches were found throughout the areas.
According to a Chicago Department of Public Health report, inspectors failed both the Rendezvous Café and the patient kitchen on Oct. 16 after discovering the cockroach infestation, along with numerous sanitation and maintenance violations.
Cockroaches were found in the main food preparation and grill area, deep fryer area, dry storage area, valve room/closet and main dish room. Because of the infestation, health inspectors ordered pest control treatment, the elimination of all pest activity, and the cleaning and sanitizing of surfaces and equipment.
Black slime buildup was also found in an ice machine, including slime dripping onto ice intended for human consumption. Inspectors also documented grease buildup on cooking equipment, walls, floors and shelving, along with food debris on a can opener.
Health officials said previous violations from an April 15 inspection were not corrected, including dead cockroaches beneath storage racks and near a sink, as well as grease, food debris and dirt on floors.
Other violations included improperly stored utensils, milk crates being used as shelves, a torn cooler-door gasket and damaged or missing floor tiles and grout.
Citations were issued for the cockroach infestation, the black slime in the ice machine and the failure to correct previously cited violations.
A hospital spokeperson issued the following statement to NBC Chicago:
“We recognize the importance of maintaining the highest standards for food safety and are taking the necessary steps to address the findings and meet all requirements to safely resume kitchen operations. In the meantime, patients continue to receive meals without interruption, with alternative food preparation and meal service arrangements in place.”
