Bears players drew criticism from many on social media after they were heard chanting during a frightening moment on the field during the team’s game against the Falcons.
Atlanta rookie linebacker Kendal Daniels made a tackle on Bears tight end Colston Loveland and remained on the ground. He was attended to for several minutes and strapped to a board by trainers and left the field on a cart. His legs, body, head and shoulders were strapped down.
Several defensive players on the Falcons were on one knee while Daniels was being attended to. Eventually, the entire Falcons bench came over on the field to support him. Multiple Bears players were also on one knee while Daniels was worked on.
While the team and medics surrounded Daniels, a section of Bears fans could be heard chanting “Green Bay sucks.”
In the moments following, reporter Courtney Cronin said Bears players were telling fans to stop the chant from the sidelines.
In the hours after, social media roared with criticism, even from Chicago.
“Maybe not right time & place,” reporter Brad Biggs wrote.
One video making the rounds, however, appeared to show that the chant may not have been entirely what it seemed.
According to the footage, which users said offered “context,” a fan wearing Green Bay Packers gear was spotted in the stands egging on Bears fans at the time of the chants.
While many argued the context did not excuse the situation, others said the intent behind the chant mattered.
The Falcons said that Daniels was alert and had movement in all his extremities and was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for further evaluation. He was seen after the game in the locker room walking under his own power.
