It was just last week at the 2026 Aachen Swim Festival where 27-year-old Dutch Olympian Nyls Korstanje made his post-injury debut and, unfortunately, his racing return has already hit a setback.
There in Germany, Korstanje took on the men’s 50m fly where he grabbed gold in 23.19, the 50m free where he placed 4th in 22.27 and the 100m fly where he snagged silver in 53.23 (all SCM). However, posting on social media this past weekend, the former NC State swimmer communicated that he is suffering from some ‘hefty nerve-related symptoms’ as a result of competing.
“Comeback looking a little different than expected :’)”, the national record holder stated.
“At last weekend’s competition I developed some hefty nerve-related symptoms. We were able to act quickly and at the end of this week I had surgery on my lower back. Everything went well and now the focus is back on recovery and rehab. So comeback part 2 incoming big shoutout to the @knzbned medical staff and @annaziekenhuis for acting so quickly and @cwznijmegen for the love and care ”
This means Korstanje will not be competing at the Dutch Qualifiers this week, a competition which, along with the just-concluded World Cup, represents a primary opportunity to qualify for this year’s Short Course World Championships.
At the previous edition of SC Worlds in 2024, Korstanje brought home the bronze medal in the men’s 50m butterfly, clocking a mark of 21.68 after registering a new Dutch standard of 21.62 in the heats.
