The cultural obsession of Letterboxd ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

From books to movies to music, there seems to be an app for everything. Letterboxd is an app that blends movie tracking with a community dedicated to film discussions. The social app allows movie fanatics the ability to gather to rank, review and rate films

The platform encourages audiences to engage with film debates, follow other users, identify their four personal favorite films and discover new recommendations based on their activity and popular films. The app has gone on to be a cultural phenomenon due to its high percentage of Generation Z users.

Jimmie Thompson, a senior majoring in psychology, said the app makes him feel connected to his generation. Thompson said he likes that Letterboxd helps him keep track of films he watches and enjoys viewing others’ opinions, especially the comment section.

“My favorite type of reviews are the ones that critique movies in the most annoying way possible,” Thompson said.

The app enables creativity by allowing its users to create a vast range of reviews, whether that be serious criticism or funny lines capturing moments of a film.

Delaney Cramp, a junior psychology major, said she discovered the app from her sister. If the movie really impresses her, she will rate it. Cramp said she enjoys witnessing others react to her watched films.

“You Can See Everything,” a non-fiction picture from A24 was released this month. It has become the most reviewed film on Letterboxd. High ratings like these reflect a film’s approval from a passionate, engaging, cinema-loving audience.

“My favorite one is when people watch ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ for the first time and how it altered their brain chemistry,” Cramp said.

Mina Rahmat, a junior majoring in criminal justice, shares a similar sentiment to Cramp. She said the app functions as social media for film lovers.

“Sometimes it’s good to see a new film and compare how you feel with others. It’s niche but also has a community,” Rahmat said.

The Letterboxd platform has shown its influence across the media landscape. It is now common to see film-related events ask celebrities for their top four favorite films while promoting the app and mimicking the online version of the app’s popular feature.

With apps like Letterboxd that combine social media with a personal log, students have shown they can tune into films and engage with the content to the point of creating a cultural movement.

“It makes me feel connected by finding people my age being formed and molded by some of the best movies of our generation,” Cramp said.
