1990 No. 1 Song From British Rock Band EMF Named Among ‘100 Greatest One Hit Wonders’ ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

“Unbelievable” was a 1990 hit from the British rock band EMF. It rose all the way to number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Cash Box Top 100. The song also received a BMI Pop Award and was ranked No. 31 on VH1’s list of “100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders.”

Ian Dench, the guitarist for the band, came up with the lyrics while he was riding his bicycle, thinking about his ex. In an interview with PowMag, he gave more details about the creation of the song. “All the songs on Schubert Dip were about the girl who had just dumped me,” he explained. “We had been less-than-honest with each other, and I was looking for lyrical concepts when it struck me that the word ‘unbelievable’ meant both that she was wonderful and less-than-honest.”

He continued, “’Unbelievable’ started with the phrase, ‘The things you say, your purple prose just gives you away, the things you say, you’re unbelievable,’ and the riff which Zac [Foley] and I played in unison,” he explained. “We were into the West Coast bands who absorbed hip-hop into their live sound, like The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Faith No More. And Zac loved to pank his bass. Zac was a prince amongst men; a naughty, wickedly funny, rebellious prince, like a cross between Prince Hans of the Southern Isles and Aron Stark. He was our best friend, and we miss him dearly.”

Foley died in 2002 at the age of 31.

Dench also spoke about the song becoming an even bigger hit in the United States than in the UK. “It felt… unbelievable!” he said. “More indescribable, but I’ll try. When you pick up a guitar and start playing in a band and hear all the stories of bands taking off in the U.S., of musical euphoria, adoration, and excess, you dream of it happening to you but don’t really believe it will. So as we drove into the US that night that James described, with a six-week sold-out tour ahead of us, it was like driving into our dreams.”
