Gauchos and Mustangs settle for ties in women's soccer

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) -

NCAA Men's Soccer: UCSB 2, CS Fullerton 1: The UC Santa Barbara Men's Soccer team converted another halftime lead into victory on Saturday night, with Steinar Bjornsson's two early goals enough to carry the Gauchos past Cal State Fullerton, 2-1. The result continues Santa Barbara's Big West unbeaten streak, now at 13 games, just one shy of matching the program record. The Gauchos could also clinch a spot in The Big West Championship field in their next conference match, with a win at UC Irvine next Saturday enough to cement their place as a semifinal host.

Cal Poly 4, #22 Oregon State 3:Midfielder Colin Pearce matched a program record with three assists, forward Quinn Mahoney scored two goals in 95 seconds to hand the Cal Poly men’s soccer program the lead and, during a match in which goalkeeper Dylan Glowaski saved a penalty and No. 22 Oregon State saw an equalizing goal chalked off with 72 seconds remaining, the Mustangs outlasted the Beavers Saturday evening, 4-3.

Cal Poly faced a 2-1 halftime deficit after a 10th-minute goal from Beavers midfielder Milo Wray and defender Sava Catlett’s effort 57 seconds before the break cancelled out Mustang defender Tanner Casey’s 12th-minute header from a Pearce corner.

Glowaski, in just his second collegiate start, finished with three saves – including turning away Oregon State forward Wyatt Borso’s 19th-minute penalty attempt.

The Mustangs, however, equalized in the 61st minute through Mahoney’s redirection of another Pearce corner. Just 95 seconds from the restart, Pearce crossed into the Oregon State penalty area and Mahoney, after volleying to himself (right), fired past Beavers goalkeeper John Nicolson for the 3-2 lead.

With Cal Poly scoring three goals in 10 minutes, forward Finn Linas latched onto a blocked Casey scissor kick in the 71st to slot past Nicolson for a 4-2 advantage.

The Beavers pulled a goal back in the 82nd through Borso’s Pac-12 Conference-leading 11th goal of the season. Oregon State then equalized in the 89th minute, but – following a video review – the goal was disallowed after Borso was cited for a high boot on Casey while attempting a bicycle kick.

NCAA Women's Soccer: UCSB 1, UC San Diego 1: The UC Santa Barbara Women's Soccer team (8-2-6, 3-1-3) tied UC San Diego (7-3-5, 3-1-3) 1-1 on Saturday at Harder Stadium in a pivotal Big West matchup. Both teams came in tied for third in the conference, and both left the field with a point and in the same position.

UC Santa Barbara spent much of the first half defending the Tritons' pressure but limited the damage to a 1-0 halftime deficit. Maddie Buckley was tested 31 seconds in and made a save on a shot before UCSD broke through in the 11th minute. The Gauchos answered with a brief attacking spell, getting a Caitlyn Simons shot, a corner kick and a Delilah Vega-Aguilar attempt saved by the UC San Diego goalkeeper in less than a minute. After falling behind, UC Santa Barbara kept the Tritons from adding on during a strong stretch that included a Buckley save and three UCSD corners. UC Santa Barbara gained momentum again late with a corner and an Allison Gonzalez shot just before halftime, but UCSD carried the 1-0 lead into the break.

UC Santa Barbara tied the match at 1-1 in the 69th minute, when Vega-Aguilar finished off Regan Stiner's assist off a corner kick. Earlier in the half, UC Santa Barbara nearly broke through with two corner kicks and five shots in the first seven minutes after halftime. This stretch included saved shots from Gonzalez, Reese Wroblewski and Ava Ybarra. Ybarra forced another save in the 66th minute, and after the equalizer, Simons nearly added another in the 76th minute with a shot off the left post. The Tritons tested Buckley repeatedly over the final 14 minutes, but Buckley made four saves in that stretch as UC Santa Barbara finished the half and the match level at 1-1.

Cal Poly 0, CS Bakersfield 0: During head coach Bernardo Silva's return to Cal State Bakersfield for the first time since taking over the Mustangs, Cal Poly (5-5-5, 2-2-3) played to a 0-0 draw against the Roadrunners (2-12-2, 1-5-1) on Saturday night.

It was Cal Poly's second scoreless draw this season, the first coming against Cal in Berkeley at the beginning of September. The result keeps Cal Poly in sixth place, now tied with Long Beach State (8-3-5, 2-2-3) for the final spot in the Big West Championship field.

Cal Poly kept the pressure on in the first half, outshooting the Roadrunners 6-2 but unable to find the back of the net.

The Mustangs had two chances to score late in the first half. In the 38th minute, Annika Smith received a feed from Kammy MacLennan at the penalty spot, but her shot was turned away, and Zoe Minnery's attempt on the rebound hit the post and bounced out of danger.

Just a minute later, Miah Thomas' left-footed shot found the gloves of the Roadrunners goalkeeper, and neither team could find another chance for the remainder of the first half.

Searching for the winner in the 87th minute, Mya Clarke got on the end of a pinpoint cross off a free kick, but her header took a deflection off a defender and was saved.

Shannon Porubski's 32nd consecutive start in net saw her defense completely wall off the Roadrunners attack, allowing no shots on goal as a defensive unit for the first time this season. Only one of Bakersfield's shots came from inside the box.

The Mustangs return home on Wednesday, hosting Blue-Green rivals UC Santa Barbara at 6 p.m. for the final regular-season meeting as Big West foes, with the Gauchos heading to the WCC next season. Cal Poly also hosts UC Irvine later that week at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
