SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (KEYT) The Colleges of Law hosted its 2026 Inaugural Awards Brunch at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort on Saturday.
Former Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce Dudley gave the keynote address.
Dudley also received the Distinguished Alumni Award, that isn't given often, and she recently had a statewide wellness initiative named in her honor.
The initiative was inspired by her youngest son, Sam, who is a firefighter who worked during the Thomas Fire and Montecito Mudslide.
Dudley recalled nursing Sam, while studying during he second year of law school.
Her son Matt attended the brunch and Dudley told a story about him, too.
She said Matt brought one of her law books to his kindergarten for show and tell.
She recalled him saying 'My mommy goes to school, just like me.'
"At least that is the way I remember the story, now, and just then, I realized we are all role models, those of us who go to law school with kids," said Dudley.
Her law career seems full circle as she now teaches at The Colleges of Law.
"I'm so honored to be here, but the big deal to me is I actually get a chance to practice law, it was this dream and I've been able to do some things with it, which made a difference in people's lives," said Dudley.
Distinguished Service Award winner Jack Futoran and his brother had people in stitches as he accepted his award with a skit.
Professor Steve Feder also received a Distinguished Service Award and told a story about meeting Rosa Parks when he was just a youngster working in a Detroit shoe store.
He shared an inside scoop about her experience that kept the audience enthralled, like he probably does with his law students in class.
Students also honored other faculty members including Ventura County Deputy District Attorney David Barnes, who could not attend in person.
Students from the Ventura and Santa Barbara campuses with top grades also received recognition and some won scholarships thanks to local philanthropists.
