The Illinois High School Association said Friday that Lincoln-Way East High School will remain on probation through the end of the 2026-2027 school year following two incidents involving its students and students from Homewood-Flossmoor High School.
An investigation determined Lincoln-Way East students were captured on video displaying racist actions and harassment toward students and fans from Homewood-Flossmoor High School during a football game between the two schools on Sept. 4, the association said in a statement. The students in question weren’t participants in the game.
The IHSA said the Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210 Board of Education, “reacted swiftly and responsibly in condemning the ugly behavior and addressing the situation to the best of their ability.”
The students were not subject to additional IHSA sanctions because they are no longer enrolled in the district.
In a separate incident the following day, cross-country runners at Homewood-Flossmoor reported that Lincoln-Way East coaches directed inappropriate remarks at them during a cross-country meet. The IHSA said it reviewed statements and other evidence but “it was unable to corroborate any malicious language directed at anyone involved in the meet.”
The IHSA acknowledged that Lincoln-Way East coaches showed poor judgment in the language they used toward their own student-athletes. The association added that a portion of the course has historically been known by a term that may seem innocent in one context but can be interpreted as racially insensitive in another.
The IHSA said it accepted the educational requirements Lincoln-Way East imposed on its coaches in response to the incident.
