Tatum O’Neal is back on social media and thriving, 6 years after her life-changing stroke.
O’Neal, 62, the daughter of actor Ryan O’Neal, found fame as a kid in her groundbreaking role in Paper Moon, the 1973 American road comedy-drama directed by Peter Bogdanovich. The role earned her an Academy Award at age 10, and she went on to roles in films like the teen flick Little Darlings and The Bad News Bears. However, the following years were a struggle for O’Neal, and she suffered from extensive personal issues. Her battles with addiction and a fractured marriage to tennis star John McEnroe landed her in the headlines frequently.
Years later, O’Neal has found peace, but it didn’t come easily. In 2020, she suffered a devastating stroke that left her immobilized. Now healthy and happy, O’Neal made a rare appearance on social media with a sweet selfie that showed her smiling for the camera.
In the caption, O’Neal simply wrote “hope.”

O’Neal Was Able to Give a Speech at Her Son’s Wedding
Five years after her debilitating stroke, O’Neal was able to give a powerful speech at her son’s wedding. The moment was a tremendous triumph for O’Neal, considering she nearly died just a few years before.
In an interview, Kevin McEnroe shared how special it was to see his mom thrive at his June 2025 nuptials to actress Fern Cozine.
“My mother — who suffered a stroke in 2020 that left her temporarily nonverbal and immobile, but who fought her way back with grit and, at times, a kind of abridged elegance — got up and gave a speech,” Kevin told Vogue in a revealing interview. “She thanked my father and stepmother for having her, told a bit of her wild life story, which she can’t seem to help, but also spoke of a future filled with love, hope, and joy. She was brave and gracious, and I was proud of her for doing so.”
