Alan Menken Discussed Working With His Late Collaborator Howard Ashman for ‘Beauty and the Beast’

Beauty and the Beast, which was co-directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, marked lyricist Howard Ashman‘s final Disney film before his 1991 death at the age of 40. In a 1991 interview with Good Morning America, alongside Paige O’Hara, who provided the voice for Belle, composer Alan Menken noted that Beauty and the Beast ends with a dedication to Ashman, who was his frequent collaborator. Menken explained that Ashman had died “of AIDS” and had worked on the film “in the glow of that last year of his life.”

“It was difficult. And it was wonderful. And it was inspiring,” said Menken, who worked with Ashman for The Little Mermaid (1989).

O’Hara also shared that Ashman was still providing her notes for her performance as Belle even when his health was faltering. She explained that “early on,” while she was “recording the number ‘Belle,’ he was very healthy” and told her to “lighten up [her] voice,” as she was sounding too much like Barbra Streisand.

“Many months passed and he was very sick at that time and he would listen to the sessions with a telephone up to the speaker and he could barely speak at this time. And we were recording something there. And I couldn’t get one line right. I just couldn’t get the phrasing to work,” recalled O’Hara during the Good Morning America interview.

She said she was then informed that Ashman appeared to be saying, “Streisand,” as a reminder to keep her voice light.
