Monkees Icon Looks Back on 30 Years Since Band’s Final Album With All Four Members: ‘Yikes’ ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

For fans of The Monkees, the mid-1990s brought a rare gift, a full studio reunion featuring Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Peter Tork, and Mike Nesmith.

The resulting 1996 album Justus served as the band’s final recording by all four original members. Looking back on the 30th anniversary of that monumental project via Instagram, Dolenz reflected on how quickly the years have flown by since the foursome last created a record together, summing up the milestone in one perfect word: “Yikes.”

Opening up about the recording, Dolenz admitted he is still in disbelief over the anniversary of the reunion record, which remains a deeply cherished fan favorite. As the last surviving member of the iconic quartet, the drummer and vocalist took a moment to honor the enduring legacy he helped build alongside his late bandmates.

Dolenz began, “Today marks 30 years since JUSTUS was released. Yikes!”

He continued, “Davy, Mike, Peter and I were all back together, not only making a new Monkees album, but writing the songs, playing the instruments, producing the record, heck, even doing the catering ourselves. For the first time, the four of us were responsible for the whole thing from beginning to end. The title really said it all: JUSTUS. Just us.”

Dolenz added, “The record gave us a chance to find out what The Monkees sounded like in 1996 when nobody was handing us a musical blueprint. We could follow our own instincts, revisit a song like ‘Circle Sky,’ and bring in new songs including ‘Run Away From Life,’ ‘You and I,’ and one of my contributions, ‘Regional Girl.'”

The entertainer concluded, “It was great having all four of us back in the studio together, making a record on our own terms.”

What made Justus so distinct was how the band did everything themselves. Rather than leaning on outside composers or hired studio pros, the four musicians wrote, recorded, and self-produced the entire record on their own terms, according to Noise11. The LP was the final that featured new recordings by Jones before he died in 2012.

Fans shared their thoughts about the LP’s milestone anniversary in the post’s comments section.

“I was excited to see all 4 Monkees together again!! Album rocks!” exclaimed one follower.

A second Instagram user penned, “Oh. My. This brings back some memories.”

“Loved the whole album. It was exciting for me cause I was one of those kids that got into The Monkees in the late 80s, my father being a fan of The Monkees when he was a kid in the 60s. When we found out you guys had a new album coming out and a TV special…it was something special. I still love hearing this record. You guys did a great job!” exclaimed a third admirer.

Micky Dolenz is currently on tour celebrating 60 years of The Monkees. United States shows are scheduled through February 2027. Dolenz then heads to Australia for a series of performances scheduled throughout the month of May.
