PITTSFORD, N.Y. — At 5-1, Pittsford stands among the top teams in Section V, that’s just one number, how about one word?
“Electric,” Jesse Jablonsky, a junior wide receiver, said.
Jablonsky described the Panthers’ offense as playing “kind of like backyard football…Kind of just messing around and throwing the ball,” Jablonsky said.
Head coach Steve Marriott described what goes through his mind during plays like that, “Usually I’m like, throw it out the back of the end zone. And then I’m like, yeah, wow, great play, ya know?”
And it feels like backyard football because, well it kinda is. “We’re good at it because we’re all close. Me and Jesse, me and Brody have been best friends for longest time, so it’s easiest easy for us to get the ball up,” Dayshawn Preston, senior wide receiver, said.
Preston, Jablonsky and quarterback Brody Pusateri are not only top players in Section V but also close friends. “You know, ever since youth we knew that, you know, this team can be something special. And, you know, we’ve always been looking forward to it since then,” Pusateri said.
Preston has seven touchdowns and 35 catches this season, while Jablonsky has totaled 500 yards in six games. Pusateri said, “I mean it’s fun. Coach Marriott, Coach Burns, they all know I like to throw the ball. I like to get in some open sets sometimes. And you know let it rip…Dayshawn, Jesse and Finn Dreywood make my job ten times easier. They make me look good really. But you know it’s fun. And getting the ball in their hands and watching them make plays is always fun.”
Last season, the trio played varsity together for the first time and reached the Section V title game. “Obviously going to the finals. We realized what we could do this year and are having a great season,” Preston said.
With two weeks left in the regular season, the Panthers are focused on enjoying the time they have together. “Trying to cherish every moment with, that’s, the little time we have left. But I’m super pumped up. This is a great group of kids, and I’m really excited,” Jablonsky said.
The Panthers will host Webster Schroeder on Friday at Sutherland High School on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 pm.
