GATES, N.Y. — Gates Police say they will release the body-worn camera footage on Friday of the deadly officer-involved shooting on Spencerport Road.
News10NBC plans to cover the 10 a.m. release of the footage. Police shared details earlier this month, saying 27-year-old Haley Rodriguez pointed a replica revolver at the officer before the officer shot and killed her. The shooting happened around 1 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4.
Police describe the shooting
Gates Police Chief Rob Long said it all started when an officer was patrolling on Spencerport Road and saw Rodriguez, from Rochester, standing in the middle of the road. The officer checked to make sure Rodriguez was okay, and wanted to get her out of the road.

As the officer got out of their patrol car, Long said the officer saw Rodriguez had a replica revolver, that looked like a real revolver. Long said the officer immediately directed Rodriguez to drop the revolver and talk to them. Long said Rodriguez then raised the revolver at the officer, which at that point the officer fired at Rodriguez, hitting her.
The officer then called for backup. Emergency responders got there and took Rodriguez to Strong Memorial Hospital, where she died. Gates PD said the officer was not injured. Long said the officer is on administrative leave.
Friend of Rodriguez speaks out
After the shooting, News10NBC’s Erin Mahon spoke with one of Rodriguez’s friends. Shiona Thornton, whose kids grew up with Rodriguez, said she was heartbroken.
“She had a vibrant personality, and was someone you could talk to,” Thornton said.
Thornton said she saw reports of an officer shooting someone on social media, but did not realize it was Rodriguez until hearing from the family.
“We don’t know the whole story. There needs to be an investigation. Right now there’s no right and wrong — I just know that beautiful girl, this little girl that I knew who turned out to be a wonderful adult — did not deserve this,” Thornton said.
Thornton last saw Rodriguez on the Fourth of July and said she is still in shock. Gates Police confirmed that both the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the state Attorney General’s Office are investigating the shooting, which is standard procedure for any deadly shooting involving police.
