BBC announces two-part JK Rowling documentary with "rare archive" of Harry Potter author ...Middle East

News by : (Radio Times) -

The 61-year-old author, best known for writing the Harry Potter series, will have her life split across two episodes – tracking her childhood through to her literary success, her cultural influence and the discussion around her views on gender.

According to the synopsis, episode 1 "charts Rowling’s path from a bookish childhood and time spent writing in Edinburgh cafés to unprecedented literary success".

It will note how the books turned into a billion-pound franchise, transforming children’s publishing and winning fans both young and old around the world.

On the announcement of the documentary, Simon Young, the BBC's head of commissioning for History, said: "Thirty years after the publication of the first Harry Potter book, there feels like no better time for the BBC to explore one of the towering figures of British literature.

"No cultural history of Britain in the 21st century would be complete without the story of the boy wizard that JK Rowling created, the publishing and film-making phenomenon that she spawned, or the polarising public figure she has become."

In 2020, she published a lengthy statement detailing her stance on sex and gender debates – the essay was criticised and disputed by LGBTQ+ charities including Stonewall.

In May 2025, Rowling set up the JK Rowling Women’s Fund, which describes itself as offering legal funding support to "individuals and organisations fighting to retain women’s sex-based rights".

Harry Potter actors including Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, have distanced themselves from Rowling's views and have issued statements supporting the transgender community. Others, including Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter and Jim Broadbent, have defended the author from the criticism she has received.

As part of a 10-year plan, each of the Harry Potter books will now be turned into one season of television, with young star Dominic McLaughlin taking on the role of the titular 11-year-old Boy Who Lived as he navigates Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The first season is set for release in December, with season 2 already in production.
