Monday, Oct. 12 marks not one but two holidays: Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day.
A federal holiday observed on the second Monday of each October, Columbus Day was deemed as such in 1892, when it was established to honor Christopher Columbus’ historic voyage. Although not a federal holiday, Indigenous Peoples Day has become common in recent years as a way to recognize contributions made by Native Americans and detest Columbus’ treatment of native peoples.
President Joe Biden became the first U.S. president to formally recognize Indigenous Peoples Day, issuing a proclamation in 2021.
In 2020, the Chicago Board of Education voted to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day on the Chicago Public Schools calendar. In observance of the day, CPS will not hold classes Monday. Many other school districts are also closed with no classes Monday.
In Chicago, city offices are also closed because Columbus Day is recognized as a city holiday. The state of Illinois currently recognizes Indigenous Peoples Day as the last Monday in September after passing legislation designating the day in 2017.
Monday will also see numerous Indigenous Peoples Day events in the Chicago area, including at the Field Museum and at the Gichigamiin Indigenous Nations Museum in Evanston. In Chicago, the Columbus Day Parade, put on by the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans, steps off about 11:30 a.m. at the corner of Dearborn Street and Wacker Drive.
