ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Gateways Music Festival returned to Rochester on Sunday, bringing together world-class musicians and celebrating Black artistry in classical music.
The festival featured family concerts, intensive workshops for young string players and performances. Organizers said Rochester’s support makes it a unique place for diversity in classical music.
“It’s still the ordinary thing that you’re very unlikely to see Black people featured in that space, except for if you live in Rochester. And through the partnership that we’ve had with this community, the University of Rochester, Eastman School of Music, all the wonderful people in this community have embraced it, first and foremost, from our grassroots origins,” said Alex Lang, president and artistic director of the Gateways Music Festival.
The festival wrapped up with the Young Musicians Institute, giving local students a chance to learn from the festival’s top talent.
