The No. 5 Alabama soccer team traveled to Gainesville, Florida to take on the unranked Florida Gators Thursday. The Crimson Tide lost the game 1-0.
“It was a disappointing result tonight, but I’m still proud of our team. I thought we competed and played well,” head coach Wes Hart said. “Florida is a good team and very good at keeping possession.”
In the first six minutes of the game Florida had taken four shots. Defender Avery Brown then received a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct in the twelfth minute.
Florida had five more shots in the first half to make eight, and the Crimson Tide had five. This left the halftime score at 0-0.
“I thought we did a good job of disrupting their game plan and turning them over in their defensive half, which led to some good chances for us,” Hart said. “Unfortunately, we were not able to take advantage of those chances tonight.”
The second half started with forward Larkin Thomason getting a yellow card in the 50th minute for unsportsmanlike conduct.
The ball was then end-to-end the rest of the half with Alabama having six shots and Florida having seven.
In the 83rd minute Florida midfielder Norah Abbott received a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Then in the 89th minute Florida forward Lena Bailey scored a goal off her right boot to seal the win for the Gators.
Alabama will be back in action next Thursday at home against Georgia. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. CT.
“I look forward to getting back home for three consecutive home games starting with a tough Georgia team,” Hart said.
