Oklahoma stunned the nation with a 27-24 upset win over then-No. 1 Texas in the Red River Rivalry Game on Saturday, and those surprised included the individuals calling the game.
ESPN’s Greg McElroy was the color commentator for the broadcast and took to his ‘Always College Football’ show Sunday to recap what went down at the Texas State Fair.
To start, he laid out just how unlikely Oklahoma‘s victory was given how the game progressed.
“They punted 9 times, they got 0 touchdown passes from their quarterback, they produced less than 240 yards,” McElroy explained. “And yet you knock off the No. 1 team in the country anyway.”

— Always College Football (@AlwaysCFB) October 11, 2026McElroy went on to discuss how the Sooners managed to rally after trailing for much of the afternoon, with him adding that this is OU’s first win over an AP No. 1 team since it took down Missouri in the 2007 Big 12 title game.
To wrap up, McElroy also took a moment to talk about how special it was to play a role in the coverage of such a memorable sporting event.
“An amazing game, incredible atmosphere and a true treat to be a part of it and call that game,” McElroy said.
