Cornell University has canceled its upcoming homecoming concert amid backlash over its handling of sexual assault allegations.

The Cornell Concert Commission announced on Instagram Friday (Oct. 9) that it had canceled a homecoming concert featuring indie-pop duo Between Friends, which was scheduled for Oct. 17 at Barton Hall in Ithaca, New York.

“The Cornell Concert Commission is a student-run organization and, as students, we stand with Jane Doe and all survivors of sexual violence,” the post reads. “It takes so much strength to come forward with such a painful truth, and Jane Doe needs all the support she can get to stay strong during this turbulent time.”

The cancellation comes amid mounting scrutiny over a lawsuit filed in September by a woman identified as Jane Doe against Cornell University and seven members of its Chi Phi fraternity. The lawsuit alleges that the men gave her drugs and alcohol before repeatedly sexually assaulting and raping her at a fraternity party in October 2024. The men have denied wrongdoing, saying that the encounters were consensual or misrepresented in the suit, according to The New York Times.

On Oct. 3, Cornell President Michael I. Kotlikoff pledged an independent review of the university’s handling of the case, saying, “We as an administration and community must do better.” Three days later, Cornell announced that former U.S. Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates would lead the review.

“It is essential that we advocate and stand up for those failed by the university’s administration,” the Cornell Concert Commission continued on Instagram. “We call on Cornell to create meaningful changes that protect and support survivors.”

The concert commission also said it is working to organize a charity event featuring student bands and DJs to support sexual violence prevention efforts. All proceeds from the planned concert will benefit RAINN, a nonprofit organization dedicated to combating sexual violence.

If you or anyone you know needs support, you can reach out to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. The organization provides free, confidential support to sexual assault victims. Call RAINN’s National Sexual Assault Hotline (800-656-HOPE) — which is available 24/7, 365 days — or visit the anti-sexual violence organization’s website.
