When it comes to romantic getaways, Italy has always been something of a honeymoon heavyweight. Between gondola rides in Venice, sunset dinners along the Amalfi Coast and sipping Chianti in Tuscany, it’s practically impossible to imagine a more swoon-worthy destination to celebrate saying “I do.”
But apparently, love is in the air somewhere else for 2027.
According to a newly released luxury travel report, Italy has officially been dethroned as the world’s most sought-after honeymoon destination. And we’re not talking about a close second-place finish, either.
The longtime favorite has dropped all the way to fourth place, with three dreamy destinations now ranking ahead of it.
So, which romantic escape has stolen Italy’s crown?

What Is the No. 1 Honeymoon Destination for 2027?
Drumroll, please. Greece has officially taken the top spot, according to the 2027 Virtuoso Luxe Report, ending Italy’s longtime reign as the leading luxury honeymoon destination.
The annual report surveyed more than 3,100 travel advisors across over 50 countries to identify the destinations and experiences shaping luxury travel in the year ahead.
And while Italy held the No. 1 honeymoon position in Virtuoso’s 2026 rankings, Greece has now leapfrogged its Mediterranean neighbor, with Bali claiming second place and the Maldives coming in third.
Of course, it’s not exactly difficult to understand Greece’s romantic appeal.
From whitewashed villages and spectacular sunsets in Santorini to secluded coves in Milos and waterfront dining in Crete, the country offers everything from barefoot beach escapes to five-star island-hopping adventures.
And couples aren’t necessarily sticking to the usual suspects.
According to Euronews Travel, Virtuoso-affiliated travel advisor Kayla Zeigler says honeymooners are increasingly looking beyond the classic Santorini-Mykonos combination in favor of destinations like Paros, Milos and Crete.
Zeigler points to a growing desire for more relaxed, authentic experiences that still deliver on luxury, with travelers seeking out intimate hotels, private excursions and opportunities to immerse themselves in local culture.
Meanwhile, the Athens Riviera is emerging as another appealing option for couples who want to combine a city break with a beach vacation.
The Top 5 Honeymoon Destinations for 2027
According to Virtuoso’s latest rankings, these are the five destinations luxury travel advisors say are leading honeymoon requests for the coming year:
Greece Bali, Indonesia Maldives Italy French PolynesiaInterestingly, Italy hasn’t lost its appeal across the board. It still ranks second among Virtuoso’s top global luxury destinations for 2027, behind Japan, and holds the No. 1 spot for family and solo travel.
Greece, meanwhile, comes in fourth among the most requested global destinations, suggesting its honeymoon success is part of a broader surge in interest.
So, is Italy officially out of the honeymoon game? Hardly. But for couples planning their first big adventure as newlyweds in 2027, Greece appears to have captured their hearts.
