News by : (Parade) -

John Prine is being celebrated in a big way on what would have been his 80th birthday, with a new collection of music giving fans another chance to hear the beloved singer-songwriter’s work.

Prine, who died in 2020 at age 73, would have turned 80 on Saturday, Oct. 10. To mark the milestone, his label, Oh Boy Records, released Found Dogs, an archival collection featuring five previously unreleased original songs alongside alternate versions, acoustic performances and demos.

The collection celebrates the 30th anniversary of Prine’s 1995 album, Lost Dogs & Mixed Blessings. Drawn from the original recording sessions and demos, Found Dogs offers a fresh look at the creative process behind some of the music he made during that period.

Among the previously unheard songs are “Hey Ah Nothin’,” “World Without Love” and “Dogs in Burlington.” The collection also includes alternate versions of “Ain’t Hurtin’ Nobody” and “Quit Hollerin’ at Me,” a solo acoustic recording of “Humidity Built the Snowman,” and a demo of “Lake Marie.”

The new release is part of a larger celebration of Prine’s life and legacy.

On Oct. 8, artists including Steve Earle, Margo Price, Nathaniel Rateliff, Jeff Tweedy and John C. Reilly gathered at Chicago Theatre for Souvenirs: 80 Years of John Prine, a tribute concert featuring performances of his songs. The event benefited the Hello in There Foundation, established by Prine’s family after his death to support community organizations.

Chicago is also marking the occasion with a special proclamation: Mayor Brandon Johnson declared Oct. 10 John Prine Day in the city. Additional birthday events include a mural dedication and celebrations at the Old Town School of Folk Music, along with activities in Maywood, Illinois, where Prine grew up.

Born in 1946, Prine built a career spanning five decades, earning admiration from fellow songwriters and fans for his sharp wit, compassionate storytelling and ability to find meaning in everyday life.

His 1971 self-titled debut introduced songs including “Angel From Montgomery,” “Sam Stone” and “Paradise,” helping establish him as a distinctive voice in American folk and country music.

Prine died on April 7, 2020, from complications of COVID-19.
