Fake spiderweb Halloween decorations can be as harmful as they are spooky. Here's why ...Middle East

You may want to think twice before hanging up fake spider web decorations this spooky season as they pose a harmful hazard to wildlife like birds and bats, experts say.

Being mindful of the “things that we put out into the world” is important year-round, but especially during the holiday season, according to Dr. Seth Magle, senior director of the Urban Wildlife Institute at Lincoln Park Zoo. “Animals are moving through these neighborhoods, in the suburbs, cities — and all kinds of areas — and the things that we put out can be a hazard to them.”

Birds, bats and small animals can get tangled and injured in things that people leave outside, especially decorations like the fake cobwebs that stretch between areas where those animals might fly or around plants that they may move around, perch or peck on.

“I’m not trying to be the fun police here, I know Halloween is fun and people want to do decorations and there are ways to do it that are more thoughtful,” Magle said.

Magle suggested thinking about the yard or space you’re decorating from the perspective of the animals you see in the area to consider how they may interact with or be impacted by the display — especially if you hang bird feeders or have other things in your yard that animals may be drawn toward.

“If birds have come to associate your house with resources, and then suddenly you’re covering it in this webbing, that’s something you could think twice about,” Magle said.

If you’re a huge fan of the fake cobwebs and feel it just wouldn’t be the Halloween season without them, there are ways to use them that might limit the dangers they pose to wildlife — like hanging them flush against the siding of your house or tied up against a surface that isn’t going to be appealing to animals.

Areas to specifically avoid:

On and around plants Stretched across or between areas animals may fly through Stretched across windows

One tip Magle gave that actually could help protect birds as the holidays line up with the migratory season is to hang up decorations in your windows.

“Windows in general are a big hazard for birds,” Magle said. “If you have fun Halloween stickers and decals, putting those on your window could do two things at once: they could celebrate the holiday and help protect birds from running into the windows because we know that stickers and things like that on windows really help birds to perceive the window and not smash into it.”
