Taking over the Champion girls soccer program at the age of 19 was a tall task for Flashes coach Emily Metheny. Fresh out of high school and with just one season of coaching experience with Champion’s boys junior varsity team, Metheny took over a girls varsity program coming off a 16-2 season and a regional appearance.
Since taking over, however, Metheny and the Flashes have thrived.
On Monday, Champion beat Struthers 7-0. It was the team’s sixth shutout victory of the season. It also marked Metheny’s 100th win at the helm of the program.
“This is really just a reflection of all the amazing athletes I’ve been able to have throughout these last eight years,” Metheny said. “I’ve just been fortunate to coach all these great players, and to have them with me during this milestone on Monday was really awesome. I’m just grateful to have been a part of Champion during this and be with them through all of it. I don’t take any wins that come by for granted. It was a special moment. Eight seasons have now gone pretty quick, so for this to have already happened, it’s just a great moment and it’s a great milestone to have with my athletes.”
In the midst of her eight seasons, the Flashes have seen no shortage of success. Champion has finished above .500 in each season, and has won more than 10 games in all but two. The Flashes’ best season so far under Metheny was in 2023, when Champion reached the regional final, where the team fell short to Akron Manchester. The 3-2 defeat was the Flashes’ only loss that season.
It would be easy to point to that 2023 season as the highlight of her career thus far, but Metheny has found something worth remembering from each win.
“Every win has something special in it,” Metheny said. “There’s not just one here or there. Every win in this 100 has been special, and I can take away something that I’ve been able to see within my athletes and their accomplishments within those wins that has really been amazing.”
While racking up wins is obviously an important part of the job, Metheny is more concerned about sustained, long-term success. That’s why she has made an effort to get as many players on the field as she can in each game. Metheny treats getting her entire roster on the field during a game as equally important as getting a win.
With six wins this year by five or more goals, that’s been a feat they’ve been able to accomplish.
“I want as many athletes in the game as possible. Everybody learning, you know what I mean?” Metheny said. “Because you never know who needs to step up next and when you’re going to need to utilize somebody. I’ve always wanted to build a program, not just win a season. I feel like that’s something that has been able to help us these last eight years. Just getting every girl in where we can, having them get those opportunities, and never just settling, because it’s about building a program for years to come and not just trying to win right now in this exact game.”
Building a program is at the forefront of Metheny’s approach. It’s something that has only become more of a priority now that she is in her first year as the school’s athletic director. Her sporting background has helped her handle the multiple roles as she also works alongside the track and flag football programs in the spring.
“Athletics has just always been a huge part of my life. I’ve grown up playing every single season, multiple sports a season, and it just really has created me into the person I am today,” Metheny said. “That hard work ethic. That’s something that I just want to instill in all of my athletes because sports is that thing that preps you for the outside world, and I want them to be able to have these characteristics that they can utilize when they’ve long left Champion soccer, and give them something they can look back on other than scoring or stopping a goal or something like that. Characteristics and traits and learning lessons that they can take from the field and apply to their real life. I mean, that’s stuff that I’ve been able to do myself, and I feel like that’s how I’ve gotten to where I’m at. I just want to be able to give those girls the same opportunities too.”
Saturday brings the chance for win No. 101 as the Flashes host rival LaBrae at 11 a.m.
