Don’t look for Ben Affleck on Instagram. While you’ll find just about every other actor in Hollywood on the social media site, Affleck doesn’t have an official account. But that’s not even the whole story.
The Animals star doesn’t just dislike Instagram. Sure, some celebs poo-poo the platform, favoring their privacy over salacious shares. For Affleck, it’s more of a he’s not allowed to use it type of thing. That’s right, the actor was banned from Instagram. And not only was Affleck banned from Instagram, but he was banned twice.

Affleck recently spoke to Variety, explaining what happened. “I got banned from Instagram twice for impersonating myself.”
As it turns out, Affleck wasn’t using IG to impress fans. Instead, he was just trying to be a doting dad. “I had six followers. It was my kids and some of their friends. It was just an excuse for me to look at [my kids’] social media accounts.”
The father of three famously shares 20-year-old Violet, 17-year-old Seraphina, and 14-year-old Samuel with ex-wife Jennifer Garner. While he was okay with using Instagram to snoop on his kiddos, Affleck isn’t into oversharing. “There used to be a time when everything you said or did wasn’t on the permanent record. As you get older, you become aware of what that means. I experienced the whole world and had a whole life in private. I have a real sense of how valuable that is.”
He continued, “ I think Daniel Day-Lewis and Meryl Streep and Viola Davis and Denzel Washington are brilliant actors. It doesn’t help me to appreciate their movies to see what they had for lunch. I realize I sound like an old, out-of-touch person, but I believe that as an actor you have to maintain an illusion.”
That said, Affleck does understand the changing landscape of Hollywood in light of the social media boom. He told Variety, “Every time I do a movie with young actors, we talk, and I get a sense it’s tougher. They feel an enormous pressure to be accruing an online following. Casting directors ask about [social followings] because it’s a meaningful metric.”
So will fans see Affleck back on social media anytime soon? Based on his latest statements, it doesn’t look like it. When asked how he would have done if he were just starting his career in the age of Instagram, TikTok, and X, the actor answered, “I’d be a terrible influencer.”
