For Tuesday night’s home opener, the Blackhawks made some changes to their blue line arrangement — and it clicked. The Hawks limited the St. Louis Blues to 14 shots on net in the first 40 minutes, a total they matched when desperately chasing in the third period.
Digging into how some of those new pairs worked, it looks like the Blackhawks coaches might have found something on the top pair.
I will start by saying yes, this is a small sample size. But we have enough of one to make a comparison at this point. And it’s striking.
Thru four games at 5-on-5, Bowen Byram has spent 24:55 with Alex Vlasic. During their time together on the ice (again, at even strength), the Blackhawks have been out-shot 18-4 and opponents have a 39-11 shot attempt advantage. The Blackhawks have been out-scored 3-0 with those two on the ice at 5-on-5.
Byram has now spent 22:21 on the ice at 5-on-5 with Artyom Levshunov. During their time together at even strength, the Blackhawks have been out-shot 7-5 but have an 18-17 advantage in shot attempts. The Hawks have out-scored their opponents 1-0 in that time.
The scoring chances for and against is a huge difference between the two pairs. When Byram and Vlasic have been together, the Blackhawks have been out-chanced 20-4. When Byram and Levshunov are on the ice together, the Blackhawks have out-chanced their opponents 10-6.
The biggest difference in the two pairings for Byram is the Blackhawks’ expected goals for percentage. While he’s with Vlasic, it’s only 8.33 percent. While he’s with Levshunov, it’s 64.85 percent.
Before the season started and into training camp, I wrote a few times about how Byram and Vlasic could potentially complement each other well. It’s still early in the season, but I’ll admit that it appears (at this point) that I was wrong on that one.
I will also note that there’s a distinct difference for Wyatt Kaiser when he’s with Sam Rinzel than there has been thus far this year with Levshunov, with whom he spent most of last year. At 5-on-5, the Blackhawks have an expected goals for percentage of 26.78 with Kaiser and Levshunov on the ice together (41:12 total ice time). When Kaiser and Rinzel are on the ice together (20:07 total ice time), the Blackhawks have an expected goals for percentage of 50.93.
