*NSYNC’s ‘Bye Bye Bye’ Ranked No. 67 on Rolling Stone’s 250 Greatest Songs ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

In 2000, *NSYNC kicked off a new decade with one of the biggest pop songs of the era. “Bye Bye Bye” became an instant boy-band classic, complete with its unforgettable choreography, catchy chorus and a music video that remains one of the most recognizable of the early 2000s.

More than 25 years later, the song is still getting major recognition.

Rolling Stone ranked “Bye Bye Bye” No. 67 on its 2025 list of the 250 Greatest Songs of the 21st Century So Far. The publication noted that the song arrived at a pivotal moment in pop music, just as the CD era was giving way to Napster, iPods, streaming and a dramatically changing music industry.

But despite becoming synonymous with *NSYNC, the song wasn’t actually written by the group.

“Bye Bye Bye” was written by Kristian Lundin, Jake Schulze and Andreas Carlsson, and the song had originally been offered to British boy band Five before making its way to *NSYNC.

Carlsson later revealed that the song was inspired by his own heartbreak. He had been left by a girlfriend for another man, an experience that ultimately helped inspire the song’s blunt message about ending a relationship.

“I had a girlfriend who left me for this guy,” Carlsson explained, according to MEL Magazine.

The song’s lyrics were about romantic betrayal, but they took on another meaning when *NSYNC recorded them.

At the time, the group was dealing with legal and business battles involving former manager Lou Pearlman. After leaving their previous label and signing with Jive Records, *NSYNC used “Bye Bye Bye” as the lead single from their third album, No Strings Attached.

That made the song’s message about cutting ties feel particularly fitting. Lance Bass later recalled that performing “Bye Bye Bye” could feel like a statement of independence from Pearlman and the control the group had experienced.

The song was released on Jan. 17, 2000, and helped usher in a massive new chapter for *NSYNC. Their No Strings Attached era would become one of the defining moments of the boy-band boom, while “Bye Bye Bye” became the group’s signature breakup anthem.
